I.S.G. K90 Talisman Thermal Imaging
Camera
One of the greatest technological advances in
the fire service is the ability to use a portable thermal imaging device. This device
allows a firefighter to "see through the smoke" and detect trapped persons,
hidden fires and potential structural defects. Up to this point, firefighters entering a
burning structure were operating without the sense of sight due to the dense smoke,
intense heat and other combustion products. This has always made it difficult to locate
and remove trapped persons - especially children who often hide under beds and in
bathrooms and closets. In addition, firefighters have long been at serious risk of
becoming disoriented in a burning building and exhausting their supply of breathing air
(e.g., the recent deaths of six firefighters in Worcester, MA). This device allows them to
find the fastest and safest way in, and out, of a burning structure. |

Thermal imaging cameras can also be useful in
non-fire situations such as rescue of persons trapped in structural collapses, cave-ins,
and when lost in the outdoors. The camera used by NOFD is manufactured by I.S.G. Thermal
Systems USA, Inc. and was selected after a thorough evaluation of several products. This
camera is the only device to meet all specifications and tests as laid out by the U.S.
Department of The Navy. The device works by displaying images on a black and white screen
such that hot items are bright white and cooler items are shown in gray and black. This
unit senses and displays differences in heat by as little as one degree. ...back to news
