What Is Fire Protection?

Fire protection is a series of practices and systems in place to reduce the risk of fires and minimize damage and injury. It includes preventive measures like safely storing combustible materials and properly maintaining electrical equipment, as well as active measures such as smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers. It also includes training for emergency evacuation procedures and practicing fire drills.

The most effective fire protection starts at the preventive stage, when a building’s occupants take the necessary precautions to keep a fire from starting in the first place. This includes having designated fire exits, keeping combustible materials far away from sources of heat and ignition, and making sure all occupants know how to respond in the event of a fire. It also involves having an emergency evacuation plan and practicing fire safety drills, as well as regularly inspecting and servicing all fire safety equipment.

Passive fire protection methods include implementing compartmentation to contain flames and smoke in one area, constructing buildings with fire-resistant materials, installing fire barriers, and using intumescent coatings to protect structural components from high temperatures. These materials should be affordable, easy to apply, and safe (not toxic during application or in service).

While no practical building material is truly fireproof, many materials offer more fire resistance than others. Steel framing, for example, offers superior fire resistance compared to wood or aluminum. Additionally, concrete is noncombustible and has low thermal conductivity so it takes longer for a fire to affect its structural integrity. Wood can also be treated to become more fire resistant. When used in construction, flame-treated lumber creates a charred barrier that slows further burning.

Carbon dioxide suppression systems, which work by removing the oxygen available for burning, are another popular form of passive fire protection. They’re often used in areas that need to remain functional, such as computer installations or power plants. However, CO2 is also an asphyxiation hazard for humans when introduced at a concentration of 34 percent or higher, so it’s not suitable for use in occupied spaces.

Active fire protection uses sensors to detect smoke or heat, and then responds by sounding an alarm, alerting authorities, or closing all fire doors. Sprinkler systems are a type of active fire protection that automatically activates when it detects heat or smoke and sprays water to suppress the fire. Fire extinguishers are a manual form of active fire protection that requires occupants to locate and operate them.

By adopting and enforcing best practices for fire prevention, business owners can protect their investments, employees, and customers. They can also minimize damage to the environment by reducing toxic gas and pollutant emissions, and avoid legal complications by ensuring they comply with local fire safety codes and regulations.
